TWAIN Technology Without An Important Name, or TWAIN, forms the scanner driver standard instigated in 1992 to provide an imaging interface between hardware and applications. The TWAIN Working Group, which maintains the standard, consists of a not-for-profit organization that represents the developers of scanning hardware and software.

Its slogan, 'Linking Images With Applications,' reflects the group's focus on providing the bridge between image acquisition and image manipulation. TWAIN began supporting Mac OS X in 1999 with version 1.9 of the standard. Intel Macs Vs. PPC Macs In Macintosh versions of Photoshop Elements preceding 6, the software installation included a TWAIN driver that enabled you to scan directly into the application. Photoshop Elements 6 marked the first Universal Binary version of the application, which can run natively on Intel and PowerPC Macs. Because the TWAIN driver that ships with the software requires a PowerPC processor, the Photoshop Elements installer does not include it in the items it places on your hard drive by default. The same limitation holds true in versions 8, 10 and 11.

To use the TWAIN driver, you must install it separately (see Resources). Scanning To scan directly into Photoshop Elements using its included TWAIN driver, you'll need a Mac that's capable of running the Rosetta PowerPC emulation.

If you're running Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, your operating system includes Rosetta by default. Under Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, Rosetta became an option that you select by clicking on the 'Customize' button when you upgrade to or install the operating system. Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and later remove support for Rosetta, which removes the ability to use the TWAIN driver that ships with Photoshop Elements.
